{"id":129,"date":"2009-01-07T17:59:06","date_gmt":"2009-01-07T21:59:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/healingmusicenterprises.com\/blog\/?p=129"},"modified":"2009-01-07T18:01:42","modified_gmt":"2009-01-07T22:01:42","slug":"129","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/healingmusicenterprises.com\/blog\/2009\/01\/129\/","title":{"rendered":"Brain Tumors and Music:  This CD could help you."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"storyheadline\"><strong>Brain cancer survivors find inspiration in CD&#8217;s healing message<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Joe Nagy of Derry was losing hope for recovery from a brain tumor when he encountered the healing message of David Bailey\u2019s music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He drew on that strength while facing his second brain surgery, Nagy said Tuesday at Integrative Medical Advisory Council\u2019s announcement of a new music therapy initiative involving Bailey\u2019s music.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve already seen, firsthand, the power that this music bring to those with brain cancer,\u201d council co-founder Barry Ritko said Tuesday during the announcement at Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown.<\/p>\n<p>A good friend of Ritko and his wife, Mary Ann, was given one of Bailey\u2019s compact discs after he was no longer able to talk or watch television due to his brain cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt hasn\u2019t affected his ability to find inspiration in lyrics that speak of hope, faith and strength,\u201d Barry Ritko said.<\/p>\n<p>The Integrative Medical Advisory Council promotes alternative and complementary therapies to help seriously ill patients survive longer and live better, Ritko said. The council has selected brain cancer as its focus for the year and launched events with Tuesday\u2019s program.<\/p>\n<p>Council leaders and Dr. Alfred Bowles, Memorial\u2019s chairman of neuroscience, presented copies of Bailey\u2019s latest CD, \u201cHope \u2013 An Anthology,\u201d to members of the hospital\u2019s brain tumor support group. The council has purchased 100 copies of the CD for area brain tumor patients.<\/p>\n<p>With support from Conemaugh Health Foundation, the council also provides children\u2019s yoga classes in\u0007Dale and massage therapy for seriously ill patients with Conemaugh Region- al Hospice and in Memorial\u2019s pallia-tive care unit.<\/p>\n<p>The organization maintains an online directory of specialists in complementary and alternative therapies at www.imacjohnstown.org.<\/p>\n<p>Nagy recalled contacting Bailey through an Internet forum for brain cancer survivors. The folk singer is a 12-year survivor and has recorded several CDs of inspirational music.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first surgery was not a lot of fun,\u201d Nagy said. \u201cThe tumor was recurring during the radiation treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nagy asked Bailey if he should have another craniotomy to remove the new tumor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018You have to, because I should be dead right now, but I\u2019m not.
