If so, it sug\u00adgests this \u201cmark\u00ader\u201d code is phys\u00adic\u00adally near a gene for that trait; oth\u00ader\u00adwise, gene-scram\u00adb\u00adl\u00ading pro\u00adcesses in\u00advolved in re\u00adpro\u00adduc\u00adtion would tend to en\u00adsure the two things stopped oc\u00adcur\u00adring to\u00adgether.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the re\u00adsearch, each par\u00adti\u00adci\u00adpant al\u00adso took three tests of mu\u00adsi\u00adcal ap\u00adti\u00adtude.<\/p>\n<p>The re\u00adsearch\u00aders re\u00adported find\u00ading \u201csig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant ev\u00adi\u00addence\u201d for an as\u00adsocia\u00adt\u00adion be\u00adtween that abil\u00adity and a small re\u00adgion of Chro\u00admo\u00adsome 4. Hu\u00adman genes lie on about two doz\u00aden dis\u00adtinct chro\u00admo\u00adsomes, most num\u00adbered by size from big\u00adgest to small\u00adest.<\/p>\n<p>The patch of DNA in ques\u00adtion en\u00adcom\u00adpassed about 50 genes, Pul\u00adli and col\u00adleagues wrote. Of par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar in\u00adter\u00adest with\u00adin these, they added, was one known as netrin re\u00adcep\u00adtor UNC5C pre\u00adcur\u00adsor. This gene, they wrote, in\u00adter\u00adacts with mo\u00adle\u00adcules that gov\u00adern the de\u00advel\u00adop\u00adment of brain cells and their intercon\u00adnec\u00adtions. Mu\u00adta\u00adtions in the gene are al\u00adso in\u00addi\u00adrectly linked to de\u00adfects in time and pitch pro\u00adcess\u00ading, they added.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s al\u00adso ev\u00adi\u00addence such mutations may be con\u00adnect\u00aded to the lan\u00adguage dys\u00adfunc\u00adtion dys\u00adlex\u00adia, sug\u00adgest\u00ading pos\u00adsi\u00adble con\u00adnec\u00adtions be\u00adtween mu\u00adsic and lan\u00adguage, the team pro\u00adposed. In\u00adter\u00adest\u00ading\u00adly, they added, of the three mu\u00adsi\u00adcal tests they used, the one with the strongest ap\u00adpar\u00adent link to the gene re\u00adgion is al\u00adso pre\u00addic\u00adtive of dys\u00adlex\u00adia, which im\u00adpairs read\u00ading and spell\u00ading abil\u00adity.<\/p>\n<p>The team al\u00adso re\u00adported two oth\u00ader snip\u00adpets of the ge\u00adnome pos\u00adsibly but more weakly linked to mu\u00adsi\u00adcal ap\u00adti\u00adtude, on Chro\u00admo\u00adsomes 8 and 18\u2014the lat\u00adter at a re\u00adgion al\u00adso linked to dys\u00adlex\u00adia.<\/p>\n<p>In find\u00adings that ech\u00adoed Pul\u00adli\u2019s some\u00adwhat, a sep\u00ada\u00adrate group re\u00adported in the April 16 ad\u00advance on\u00adline is\u00adsue of the <em>Jour\u00adnal of Cog\u00adni\u00adtive Neu\u00adro\u00adsci\u00adence<\/em> that chil\u00addren with lan\u00adguage syn\u00adtax deficits al\u00adso have mu\u00adsi\u00adcal dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adties .<\/p>\n<p>Sci\u00aden\u00adtists have long sus\u00adpected mu\u00adsic might have ge\u00adnet\u00adic roots. \u201cMu\u00adsic is an an\u00adcient and un\u00adiver\u00adsal fea\u00adture across all hu\u00adman so\u00adci\u00adeties,\u201d not\u00aded Pul\u00adli and col\u00adleagues. The not-un\u00adcom\u00admon ap\u00adpear\u00adance of fam\u00adi\u00adlies of mu\u00adsi\u00adcians, such as the clan that fa\u00admously spawned J.S.
