Anyone who has ever had a pleasant dream of a certain piece of music and awakened to the sound of it on a radio or CD, realizing that the music had made its way into the REM sleep stage, has some insight into how the surgical procedure can be more calming when enhanced with soothing or uplifting music.

Whether going into surgery or coming out of it, it stands to reason that the procedure would be much more pleasant and far less traumatic with the aid of some of the patient's favorite music.

Dr. Cash.
I am a RN currently in my senior year of BSN. I am required to write a thesis for the fall semester 2011 and have chose the topic " How non pharmacological interventions improve pain for the adult surgical patient". One of my interventions listed is Music Therapy. I have read several articles of yours and am very impressed with you. As part of the thesis paper I will be interviewing professionals knowledgable in this intervention and would be honored if you would permit an interview via e-mail. Upon agreeing to be interviewed I will send a written document outlining the interview process and questions. Thank you for your time, and have a great day.
Warm Regards
Caryn Foster, RN

As more people are enlightened to the healing powers of music, perhaps the people in high public office who are intent on cutting funds for music and the other fine arts will see the light as well.

Thanks John. Several people have told me this for the purpose of dental work and outpatient surgery. The headphones can be turned down enough that the patients can easily hear the music but can also hear questions or instructions from the doctor. It is so important in dentistry for the patient to hear as little drilling as possible!
