Now findings recently published in <em>NeuroImage<\/em> offer<br \/>\nadditional insights into how music affects our neural circuits.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1053811911013000\" class=\"broken_link\">study<\/a><br \/>\nFinnish researchers recorded the brain responses of<br \/>\nindividuals who were listening to a piece of modern Argentinian tango using<br \/>\nfunctional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technology. Afterwards, they used<br \/>\ncomputer algorithms to analyze the musical content of the tango and illustrate<br \/>\nhow its rhythmic, tonal and timbral components evolved over time. They then<br \/>\ncompared the brain responses and the musical features. Medical News Today <a href=\"http:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/releases\/238670.php\">reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The researchers found that music listening recruits not only the auditory<br \/>\nareas of the brain, but also employs large-scale neural networks. For instance,<br \/>\nthey discovered that the processing of musical pulse recruits motor areas in the<br \/>\nbrain, supporting the idea that music and movement are closely intertwined.<br \/>\nLimbic areas of the brain, known to be associated with emotions, were found to<br \/>\nbe involved in rhythm and tonality processing. Processing of timbre was<br \/>\nassociated with activations in the so-called default mode network, which is<br \/>\nassumed to be associated with mind-wandering and creativity.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Similarly, a <a href=\"http:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/news_releases\/2007\/july\/music.html\" class=\"broken_link\">past<\/a><br \/>\nStanford study showed music engages the areas of the brain involved with paying<br \/>\nattention, making predictions and updating the event in memory.
