Many of you know that my father was a minister…a Methodist minister. I grew up hearing church music and loving it. Most of my ideas about who God is and who I am and what I’m here to do on this Earth, came from the hymns that we sang and the sermons I heard my father preaching! I have learned so many wonderful things through music that I don’t think I could have taken in at such a deep level otherwise.
At bedtime, my father sang songs with my sister and me and we often memorized Psalms and other scrpture. When I saw this video of a little girl reciting the 23rd Psalm, it just reminded me instantly of my childhood and I wasnted to share it with you. I hope you enjoy it!

I know that my mother sang to me, played records for me and gave me lessons at an early age. One of my fondest memories in lying in the bed at night and hearing her play the piano after we were all in bed. I also remember standing by her in church and listening to her sing hymns with a voice that I wanted to have when I grew up. My mother loves to sing and she loves music of all kinds. She could hardly wait to take us to NYC to a Broadway musical and knew all the words to all the songs of many of the classic 50’s musicals like “My Fair Lady” and “South Pacific.”
To celebrate my mother and my daughters, I’ve put together a little musical Mother’s Day package. Please check it out and see if you think your Mama would love it!!

Serenity Headphones When you go to a physicians office, who do you see more of…the physician or the nurse? Nurses do most of the routine work at an office visit and then give the doctor a summary or symtoms, vital signs, etc. These dedicated men and women work above and beyond the call of duty every day. Let’s celebrate them, their founder Florence Nightengale and the entire profession this week! May 6-12! more

Have you ever wondered how a true musical genius or prodigy is created? Do both parents need to be extremely musical or intelligent? Although I think it helps it must not be mandatory because we know that Beethoven’s parents were not particularly musical. Not so with Mozart. Definitely his father was quite gifted and was also a composer. Leopold Mozart wrote several compositions that have stood the test of time. Of course his son, Wolfgang Amadeus wrote hundreds of brilliant works that will last for thousands of years I imagine.
A conference is being held on this topic in Bologna, Italy. Even if you can’t attend it’s good to know that these kinds of conferences exist!

The KY Derby will be run at 6:05 EDT today! It’s a beautiful day here in Louisville and the favorites include Big Brown, Pyro and Colonel John.
I want you to watch the crowd as they pan across faces of people from all over the world singing together “My Old KY Home.” There something about this beautiful melody from Stephen Foster that just touches the heart of everyone and makes them feel overwhelmed with love for their fellow man (and woman) on this beautiful day. For two minutes everyone has a dream that their turn will come today! It’s just magical…do not miss it!

Have you ever been to the Kentucky Derby? If not, have you watched it on TV?? This week in Louisville is probably even bigger than Christmas. We have major events every day for almost two weeks. This past week-end was the Mini-Marathon and the Great Balloon Race. Tomorrow morning I’m leaving at 6:30 a.m. for “Dawn at the Downs” where people like me can sit in “Millionaire’s Row” and eat a fabulous buffet breakfast while watching the horses do their early morning work-outs around the track. Should be a beautiful sight!
Will there be any healing music going on? Well, let me suggest that you turn on the TV right before the Derby race is run on Saturday afternoon. When the U of Louisville band plays “My Old Kentucky Home” there’s not a dry eye in the stands or at home. Is this healing? Many would say that tears frequently have a cleansing effect; a cathartic effect. Just think about that when you hear “My Old Kentucky Home” on Saturday. I’ll remind you before then! I don’t know about you, but I still think of Hawaii as Paradise! I’ve been twice now and it’s just as beautiful as the movies and travel books portray it. I’m not sure whether most people think of it as a place on the cutting edge of medical procedures. Thanks to my dear friend and mentor, Dr. Artur Harvey, music is now being used in the OR’s there and in at least one instance, Dr. Harvey was playing classical music live in the OR during an ophthalmic procedure! Since I have not yet really figured out how to add pictures to my posts here, I will refer you to my surgery blog “Surgery with Music.” Please enjoy this post in the surgery blog and read the previous ones while you’re there! Happy Friday!! Alice
