Dr. Cash speaks to Kentucky Holistic Nurses Association

April 21st, 2008 · Music Healing, Music Medicine, Toning and Chanting

Tonight I spoke to a delightful audience of holistic nurses about the use of music in a clinical setting.  The nurses were amazed to find out how simple and yet powerful music can be in an ER, an OR, a neonatal nursery or a hospice unit.  Music is one of the oldest means for healing individuals, couples, families and even entire groups.

To illustrate the power of music in a groups we did some drumming, toning and chanting.   We had access to some beautiful, large djembes, and with the addition of some tambourines, bells, and a wooden frog, we made some awesomely beautiful music!  As I told the group repeatedly, it’s nice when you’re “preaching to the choir.”  These were all holistic nurses and did not need convincing of music’s power.

I’ll be speaking to their State Convention next month.  Stay tuned for more information about that.  Barbara Dossey will also be speaking there!  Keep the music playing.

U of L MBA committee gives the “go-ahead!”

April 19th, 2008 · Music Healing

My phone has been ringing and my inbox has been mounting up.  Everyone wants to know what the decision was by the MBA committee studying my business model for Healing Musi Enterprises.  The presentation lasted over an hour and at the end I was presented with a nearly 50-page document detailing their results.  Of course you all know that my music for surgery invention is patent-pending so I still cannot reveal all that they said but they did determine that no one else has done what I propose to do and that the market is ripe for such an invention!  I am so excited I can hardly focus on anything else.

They also have a secondary line of action for me while I’m waiting to get the funding to create my invention’s prototype.   If you are or if you know any venture capitalists or people looking for promising investments in medical technology, please send them my way!  In the meantime I will be creating some downloadable programs for surgery.  Stay tuned for more and more information on music and surgery.  “Safer surgery, less anesthesia, the music solution!” (phrase trademarked!)

Earthquake!!!

April 18th, 2008 · Announcements

I’ll bet that got your attention…it sure got mine this a.m. about 5:37 when my bed started shaking violently!  I was pretty deep in sleep and my first though was “earthquake!!” followed quickly by “nahhhhhhh.”  I quickly decided it must have been a big truck out on the street and looked out the window.  In the movies, after an earthquake there are usually lots of fires, leaping flames and smoke and I saw none of that so I went back to bed.

An hour later I was awakened by my friend Crystal who said the TV was reporting that there had been an earthquake at around 5:30 a.m.!!  From that moment until now, Louisville has been buzzing about the earthquake and everyone is telling their story about what they thought the rumbling was about.  Many people blamed their poor pets for the commotion.  An amazing number of folks thought it was a tornado.   I’ve asked myself if there is a musical connection here but at the moment I can’t think of one.  If there were, it would be something in a minor key with slow, ponderous chords??  What do you think?

Tomorrow will be a crossroads event for Healing Music Enterprises

April 16th, 2008 · Announcements

It’s not going to be easy to sleep tonight!  Tomorrow I will hear a presentation that three MBA students have been working on as their final project.  They have been studying my business, Healing Music Enterprises, and conducting a feasibility study for my invention and ideas on music with surgery.  The presentation will be videotaped and I’ll be presented with a bound copy!!  We’ve been meeting all semester and they have been so positive about HME’s work, products, and presentations.  I’m told that with the document they present tomorrow, I’ll be able to go to potential investors and receive the money to create my invention’s prototype for final testing!  Keep your fingers crossed for !  Thank you!

Introducing the Feline “Meow-zart!”

April 14th, 2008 · Music Healing and Animals

Recently, I wrote on a post on my “Music Healing and Animals” blog about a kitty named Nora that loves to play the piano!  When I started the music and animal blog over a year ago I wondered if I’d really have enough material to post very often.  To my surprise and delight I have found tons of information about animals of all kinds and how they respond to music, make music, and go out of their way to be around music.

A friend of mine in California suggested the “Meow-zart” name for Nora and I love it!  To read more and see the sequel to the video I posted a few days ago, click here!  Also, remember if you subscribe to this blog, you will get one free download of a healing music product!

Music and Anesthesia

April 13th, 2008 · Anesthesia Waking up, Dangers of anesthesia, joint replacement surgery, Music and Surgery

Earlier today I was talking with an old friend about the benefits of music during surgery. Of course the number one benefit that I usually tell people is the fact that reasearch has documented that people using music during surgery have been known to need less than 50% of the usual amount of anesthesia. Why is this important? Because anesthesia is one of the main things that one must recover from after surgery. Pretty much all of the bodily functions such as peristaltic action, come to a grinding halt during surgery. You do know about peristaltic action? MORE

Music Going to the Dogs!

April 12th, 2008 · Music Healing and Animals

Freckles is an attentive boy, a beagle-mix rescued from sure death on Sixth Street some five years ago.He retains a strong food motive from his days of wandering the urban wilderness. So, Freckles was, as usual, at hand when my husband and I put a CD in the player and sat down on the designated doggie couch in our dog/media room.
The CD was “Songs To Make Dogs Happy,” billed as “the first musical CD for dogs, approved by dogs.”
Canine focus groups, selected from 250 dogs nationwide, were assembled and questioned by animal communicator Kim Ogden of Chicago on their music and lyric preferences.  MORE  Technorati Profile

Why is music so powerful in the “Golden Years?”

April 11th, 2008 · Music and the Golden Years

Speaking as an almost 60 y.o., I am increasingly aware on a daily basis that music makes me happy and encouraged when I’m feeling down, it calms me when I’m feeling anxious and it brings back loads of happy memories when life seems dull and uninteresting! Why? Well, obviously a lot of it has to do with brain chemistry, memory function and the power of association! Just think back for a minute:

  • do you remember your first kiss?
  • your first school dance?
  • your first real love?
  • your first child?

All of these famous firsts usually have music associated with them. Songs I remember from that part of my life include:

  • “And they called it puppy love”
  • “Cupid”
  • “Sealed with a kiss”
  • “Can’t help falling in love with you”

All I have to do is remember the tune and I’m zapped back to the sixties and all the memories I can squeeze into a few hours! The older we get, the more memories of people, places, events, movies, vacations, etc, etc. Keep track of the soundtrack to YOUR life and enjoy it often!

Want a CD of “golden oldies” from 1900-1940’s?  Dr. Cash has “Music for Memory Care.”  Click here for more information.  Enjoy!
