How Does Music Affect the Mind-Body Connection?

Music’s Effect on Mind and Body

What does music do to the body and mind? What happens in your body when you hear music that you love? Do you feel energy, calm, great joy and happiness, sadness and grief, anger, love? Well, of course, it depends upon the music you’re hearing but all of the feelings can easily be elicited by music. How does this happen? It’s all about brain chemistry and the process of entrainment. The brain responds instantaneously to pain, pleasure and emotion of all kind. Different neurochemicals are released into the brain and the body responds. Most of us know exactly what music to reach for to get the response we’re looking for.
Putting drugs into your system can do many of the same things but why risk addiction, dependence, and even prison! Reach for your favorite music instead! Questions? Drop me a line!

Music can induce a trance-like state where brain-waves synchronise with the music. Each emotion has a particular brain wave pattern and different pieces of music cause different patterns.

The irritation felt sometimes when listening to a piece of music is due to a conflict between the current/preferred brain wave pattern and the one that is being induced by the music.

Length of time can also play a part in emotional well-being. Listening to one rhythm all day long can actually cause a level of distress as the brain waves are getting no relief. Same applies if you work in a shop where they play the same CD all day long.

Thank you for your comment Lissy. I absolutely agree with you and I do believe it’s helpful for people to understand this. Most people like a variety of music though and pick and choose intuitively through the day what they want to hear based on how they want to feel. I certainly know some of the exact pieces in lots of different genres that I want to hear if I’m feeling down or discouraged. I also know what to listen to if I want to settle down and sleep or rest.
