Several years ago when CD players began disappearing and streaming music became the norm, Healing Music Enterprises and Surgical Serenity Solutions decided to digitize our playlists and put them into app format so that more people could have access to them. We started with our Classical Music playlists which is solo piano, specifically chosen pieces to calm the patient prior to surgery or other medical procedures.
We went on to commission a Jazz playlists because so many of you had requested that genre, as well as New Age.
Now we have 5 hour-long playlists, all in different genres. They range from Lullabies (for adults as well a babies!), to Music for Memory Care. They have already been downloaded all over the world and are beloved in every culture! After all, music IS the universal language.
There are literally thousands of studies now from the fields of music therapy, psychology, surgery, anesthesia, neonatology, and more, documenting the benefits of music through headphones, during medical procedures. When the patient listens through headphones, the surgeon and OR staff are free to listen to their preferred music, which is often faster and with lyrics…the opposite of what the patient needs.
I first came up with this idea when a surgical nurse told me that a surgeon she was working with like to play “Another One Bites the Dust” by QUEEN, when he was operating. She was very disturbed by this, as was I, and decided that I would try to come up with something for patients that would not only block out the Dr’s music, but also provide the best, most beautiful soothing music through headphones to the patient. My idea became a specific concept in 2005 and in 2008 I received a U.S. patent on the idea. In 2009 I began selling the pre-loaded headphones.
Now we have the mobile app for patients to download and hospitals to stream. With the proliferation of SmartPhones and tablets, everyone can have access to this therapeutic music, designed to engage rhythmic entrainment, for a fraction of the cost of the headphones.
